Air Duct Cleaning Explained
Air duct cleaning. Out of sight, out of mind. It doesn’t get the attention or the priority and don’t end up on our list very often. There are a lot of homes that have never had an air duct cleaning and ones that it may have been decades since the vents have been cleaned. The truth is, the air ducts are not unlike any other surface in your home.
Over time, dust, lint, hair and everything else settles on the surfaces. Surfaces that are exposed and especially darker colored surfaces, that dust accumulation becomes very visible and very apparent over time. Surfaces that are exposed to our living spaces, they get cleaned. We vacuum, we wipe, we clean them up. But the air ducts are remote. They are not easily accessible. They are not easily visible to us.
As that dust and filth builds up in those air ducts over time, we are oblivious to it. Air duct cleaning should be occasionally part of regular cleaning and maintenance of a home. A home isn’t clean if you clean everything else and the air ducts have not been cleaned.
The air ducts are not the source of dust, lint and dirt. What does get deposited there can be stirred up and moved around. On occasion, when the gusts or blasts of air through the duct work, this creates enough to kick it up again.
They should be part of the regular maintenance of the home to keep it clean. When we say regular maintenance, we are not talking weekly or monthly. Air ducts in a home that is well kept and clean should probably be cleaned every couple of years. If someone is meticulous or has health reasons, do it more often. Maybe once a year. Every couple of years will be a very good time frame. Budget permitting. If you are keeping your home clean otherwise and using a good filter, you could space it out longer.
